Great iphone app – Grand Dialer

Over the past few years, I have grown quite fond of the grand central service. A number that allows me to not only have one number for many phones, but also create white lists so only calls from people I want to hear from ring through. Honestly I was a bit scared when I found out google had purchased them and figured they would go to a pay service, but fortunately they haven’t.

Now, they have created this new iPhone app called grand dialer that allows you to make calls from your iphone, but have the grand central number show up on the other persons caller Id! This is a big step forward for services such as this, allowing for the user to make and recieve calls from the number.

Check it out for yourself, the app is free and available now from the app store.

By the way, this was writen and posted from the wordpress app on the iPhone entirely. Another great free app for those that use a wordpress account.

When can I get an invite I have been waiting for over 3 months.

I wish I knew! Seems like they are being stingy about giving out new numbers right now. May be a sign of something new to come.

Just tried their newest upgraded software but it didn’t seem like it did anything. It didn’t dial or try to make calls.

I just upgraded Grand Dialer. Good addition is that they added the Recent Calls tab. I wish they also added the Favorites contacts tab. Very much wanted feature: Dialing through Grand Dialer on iPhone should not call back on iPhone. It’s redundant!

does it work with the i touch

i was wondering that same thing!!! does it!!!!

Zac, the app would certainly work on the iPod Touch, as long as you had a wi-fi connection. Keep in mind that what you do with it is login to your grandcentral account, which when used to dial, connects the phone number you designate to the number that was dialed. As long as you keep your contact list updated, you would be able to dial all of your contacts and it would appear to come from the grandcentral number.

I dont get how this works on an ipod touch…how do you make calls from an ipod touch, do you have to buy a mic for it

  8. mickeypapillon on

This program doesn’t allow you to make calls, it is simply a conduit for your grandcentral account. IT uses the touch’s data connection to contact the grandcentral server to place a call to the phone number of your cell phone, then connects that call to the number you have chosen to call. THink of it like a virtual operator.

Can people call you on your ipod touch?

  10. mickeypapillon on

No, this is not an application for making your ipod touch a phone. It is a conduit for connecting your cell phone to the number you would like to dial. You must have grand central to use this.

What if your cell phone is broken?

  24. Emily W on

Dude, that’s funny that people are asking for accounts like you have them. Reading comp for the win!

Thanks for this recommendation. I dig it.

I have been using Grand Dialer since I got my iPhone. What a great app! I just converted my grandcentral account to google voice. Will you be providing a app that works with google voice?

  26. mickeypapillon on

    Craig,

I don’t think much is going to change with the new Google Voice app as it relates to Grandcentral app, but if there is an app for Google Voice, I will be sure to talk about it.

  27. lsp on

not sure i understand, grand dialer is not working with the new googlevoice, right?

(that’ll be one more reason I hate the upgrade…)

  28. mickeypapillon on

UPDATE: It looks like Grand Dialer is now not working on accounts that have been upgraded to Google Voice. Make sure you decide if this is functionality you don’t need to have before migrating.

  29. lsp on

will it? there’s a lot of “fine print” to this upgrade. I wish I’d known … seems to have imported Gmail contacts and not GC contacts, which is stupid and inconvenient. Interface is GMail like, too, but GC was much better organized. Oh well… hope an iPhone App is around the corner.

  30. mb on

It gets even more interesting… You can’t tie Google Voice to your “Google Apps” account, only your “Google Account”. My gmail has been moved to my “Google Apps” (user@domain.com) account, and my google account is an empty shell. Kind of frustrating. That and Grand Dialer doesn’t work anymore. Hopefully the Googlers have something great in store for us!

  31. mickeypapillon on

    MB,

Unreal! This is really not good that all these changes are happening and things are not being talked about that much. I’m sure there are a lot of users out there that are frustrated…

  32. lsp on

Can’t believe how poorly this was handled. I’ve emailed google for help and asked them on Twitter, and emailed Pogue after his glowing review… no answers. Maybe someone here knows a few answers… (phonenumber)@grandcentral.com email addresses will continue to work? Is there still a “number not in service” outgoing message?

Biggest thing of course is iPhone app, though!

  33. James Scherber on

Does anyone know if there is an update planned for Grand Dialer to make it Google Voice compatible?

  34. mickeypapillon on

Nothing is known yet. We will be sure to talk about it though once something ( if anything ) comes out.

  35. Ray on

Man……….. wish I read all these posts 1st. I screwed up: linked my GC account to an email that has nothing to do with anything, cant relink it and cant give out my email addy to other people who use the account………..AND if thats not enough, my Grand Dialer doesnt work. On a good note, I actually like it….the sms feature is very nice. Its well thought out overall but caught me off guard with my 2 issues. =^(

  36. mickeypapillon on

    Ray,

The SMS is nice, i agree. I still find the options of the google service though not as good as what Grand Central had.

  37. Dave on

This is frustrating. Hope they make it work soon.
